On Sunday, the sermon was a reflection on the parable known as the Parable of the Sower. Jesus told a story about a man who went out into the field to sow seeds.
Some fell on the path and were eaten by birds; some fell on rocky ground, sprouted but withered quickly because they had no root; some fell among weeds, and thorns sprang up and choked them; and some fell on good soil, where it grew to yield a crop: 30, 60, or 100-fold.
This was one parable that Jesus explained. He said that the seeds were the word of God, and when we speak it out, the hearers receive it in different ways. That should not prevent us from sowing it!
The preacher told us another story to illustrate the talk. A man went into a shop and found God behind the counter. “What would you like?” He asked. The man said, “As it is you, I would like peace, patience, health and hope.” God replied, “I am sorry, I do not sell fruit, only seeds.”.
Fruit grows as we receive the seed of the Holy Spirit into our lives. “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.”(1 Peter 1:23). This explains that the Holy Spirit uses God’s enduring word as a seed to give believers a new, eternal life.
“No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.” (1 John 3:9) This shows that the seed implanted by the Holy Spirit gives believers the power to resist a life of wilful sin.
Seeds, the word of God, will always provide food for thought
